In this red-hued drawing, symbolic of North Korea, I also incorporated the national flower of North Korea, the Magnolia sieboldii. As an artist, I believe in the power of art to transcend borders and envision a future of unity and reconciliation between North and South Korea. Contemporary history and news depict North and South Korea as enemy countries, in an unending war. Communist vs. Capitalist. China vs. USA. The binaries are limitless. Due to the constant othering, from propaganda on both sides, we forget that these sibling countries, were once one.
I recognize that peace and reunification require more than artistic expression alone, but I see my role as an artist in planting the seeds of hope and fostering dialogue. Through my drawings, I aspire to inspire conversations, spark empathy, and contribute to the collective yearning for a peaceful resolution on the Korean Peninsula.
