Details:

With A Tiger, Divided, I dared to envision a reunified South and North Korea. The tiger is quite emblematic of Korea, particularly of our minwha, traditional folk art also know as the people’s art, as well as traditional folklore.

On the left, are magnolias and to the right, hibiscus flowers; towards the middle, they intertwine. These flowers represent the flowers of North and South Korea, in each respective manner. The tiger, running and jumping across the page, is a depiction on how nature serves no master, nor political boundaries. Rare Siberian tigers, leopards, and other critters, exist between the untouched demilitarized zone that separates the North and South; birds fly in the open skies, despite the lines drawn by the Korean War of 1950-1953.

I like to imagine that art can be a manifestation of dreams, transforming hope in to reality. The armistice situation between the North and South is precarious at best, but to draw for peace is an act I can pledge to.
