Vengeful Shimcheong is a playful twist on the traditional tale of Shimcheong, a female heroine representative of filial piety. The original story is about a Korean woman named Shim Cheong, or “Sim Chong” who sacrifices herself into the Sea in order for her father to regain his eyesight. She is rewarded for her actions, becoming the Empress and reunites with her father when she arises from the water inside a lotus.
My take on the traditional story takes a darker turn, where I focus on Shimcheong’s most deepest, and personal thoughts. With a twist, I wanted to challenge the celebration of self-sacrifice and obeisance. If Shimcheong grew up in a different era, would she be so compliant in throwing herself into the treacherous sea?
