Symbiosis Series: Smoking Lady

from $40.00
Symbiosis Summary:
The figure in the blue backdrop is a gisaeng, an outcast woman who found positions in upper society by working as a courtesan. Although traditionally tabooed, they held more agency than we think, and I wanted her prowess, confidence, squatting, and smoking as a challenge to societal norms back then and today.

50 percent of profit will go directly to ReconciliAsian, a peace organisation based in Los Angeles, featuring programs working with Asian heritage young adults and adults in the United States and also internationally. As an aftermath of the the exacerbated anti-Asian sentiment in North America and beyond, I want to contribute to an organisation that I have a direct connection to and have positive experiences in, particularly in nurturing Asian immigrant young adults and that works towards empathy building and conversations on race. I am also an a recipient of ReconciliAsian's mentorship, initially working there as a summer intern and to a lifelong volunteer and participant. Check out their programs and activities here: http://reconciliasian.org/
