Dysmorphic Features of a Beautiful Butterfly

$30.00
In this Dysmorphia series, I delve into the intricate web of body dysmorphia and its profound impact on the perception of young women's bodies. In a world saturated with unrealistic beauty standards, I aim to challenge the damaging narratives that perpetuate the notion that beauty lies solely within the confines of Western features and body types. The statue of Venus, in Expectations of a Post Modernist Woman, is a clear representation of how beauty always pertains to a Eurocentric narrative. I confront the internalized, racial biases and self-doubt, inviting viewers to question the harmful effects of the relentless pursuit of an unattainable standard.

There are allusions to nature but they remain highly distorted. The stalk of lavender and the butterfly, despite their natural perfection, are warped, due to a dysmorphic projection. Even something so perfect, remain out of place. This is a metaphor that directly applies to how women view their own, perfect, bodies, as a result of shadows cast by unrealistic and extremely narrow beauty standards.
